Seeking variety? Stir it up a little at TEXAS CHICKEN WOK
Woody Alvarez admits he doesn’t look like the average owner and chef of a restaurant featuring Asian cuisine, but he said his Texas Chicken Wok serves up some of the best food in the area. “I’ve had people come in the kitchen wondering who cooked, since I’m not Thai,” said Alvarez, who has operated the restaurant for three years. “I always wanted my own restaurant.” Alvarez, who has part-Chinese heritage, serves Thai and Chinese cuisine at his restaurant, which is decorated with hanging lanterns, fans, and oriental-style hats. For those looking for a quick lunch for less than $5, Texas Chicken Wok offers seven choices of meat with rice or noodles starting at $3.95. “Our lunch is popular, especially with the high school kids,” Alvarez said. “We have a lot of repeat customers.” Alvarez does most of the cooking, and he offers more than 27 Thai choices, as well as 27 Chinese choices. Seafood choices include squid, shrimp and catfish. All meals come with a choice of one meat, or they can be upgraded to a combo. For the vegetarian, stir-fry is available. “Our stir-fry is very popular,” Alvarez said. People can choose whatever they want to put in it and can add meat or fish if they choose.” Alvarez said the one thing that makes his restaurant unique is friendliness and a willingness to cook each patron’s order to his or her specifications. “If they don’t want MSG, we don’t use it. If they want a special style, we’ll do it,” he said.
